Signs of Gambling Addiction

The problems associated with gambling are being hotly debated at the moment. There are so many ways to gamble now. In addition to established practices, such as betting on horse racing and other sporting events, there is more access to casinos and there are other technology based gambling temptations. Online poker sites are increasing in popularity and people bet through their mobile phones and computers. Some people obsessively buy lottery draws and scratch cards. All these methods can cause gambling addition.

It's very easy to get carried away and lose control. The adrenaline from gambling takes hold. Gamblers describe how they come alive when they are indulging. The excitement is more important than the money. As gambling addiction takes hold, victims convince themselves that they will stop when they win one last time. They carry on in the hope that their luck has to change and that the only way out is to gamble themselves out of debt. They are sucked into a spiral and some gamblers rack up incredible losses.

The medical establishment recognizes that the condition is every bit as real as alcohol or drug dependence. Gambling addiction is a psychological illness, which can cause the breakup of marriages and loss of career. The addict is secretive and deceitful and begins to lead a double life. Fortunately, many addicts go on to achieve recovery through the support of family and friends. There are organizations for addicts to kick the habit, the most well known being Gamblers Anonymous. These meetings give the gambler an opportunity to seek help from people who have been through the same experience.

Unlike other more physical addictions, trying to stop being a gambler doesn't show any outward sign of struggle. It should not be taken less seriously because of this. It can ruin lives just the same. With the advent of the Internet, it's easier than ever to gamble. You don't have to leave the comfort of your armchair. Anti gambling organizations are campaigning for laws which will govern online sites more closely. It's been suggested that a limit on bets be introduced, to discourage losing large amounts of money in a short period. Any advice on being a responsible gambler tends to be in the small print. Gambling addiction is such a big problem now that legislation may be necessary.

Towns and cities that are undergoing hardship are looking to build casinos to give them an economic boost. Whilst this is undoubtedly good for business, some people are worried about the ethical implications. The roulette wheel is in spin and it's difficult to slow it down.
